Federalization and Exacerbation of Conflict

About the Lecture:

Federalization is supposed to prevent and manage conflict in diverse societies but it has exacerbated conflict in Nepal. The presentation, based on a forthcoming publication, will explain this unusual outcome with insights drawn from a review of global literature on the subject and through an in depth examination of Nepal’s specific context. Additionally, the presentation will explain, based on an analysis of history of identity based mobilization in Nepal, why the Madhesi, whose demands for autonomy and recognition of identity were partially met, launched an intense movement while the indigenous nationalities, whose demands were completely rejected, were not able to do so.

Dr. Lawoti joined the Department of Political Science, Western Michigan University as an Assistant Professor in 2005, became an Associate Professor in 2008, and was promoted as Professor in 2011. He has authored, co-authored, edited, and co-edited around a dozen books from international outlets and published numerous academic articles and chapters and opinion pieces. He recently contributed to chapters in volumes published by Cambridge University Press (New York) and Oxford University Press (London).
